Bell Lets Talk Scam: Bell Let’s Talk is a public awareness campaign founded by Canadian telecommunications company Bell Canada to raise awareness and combat mental illness stigmatism in Canada. Thousands of scholars gathered in Vancouver in June for the Annual Congress of Humanities and Social Sciences. They delivered papers on everything from child marriage to why it’s an issue in Canada. In her Oh, the Mankind! The National Post series offers some of the most persuasive studies.
Bell Let’s Talk has become a forum for the global discourse on mental illness, but one Canadian researcher says the heartfelt social media posts of individuals can make them targets for marketers. Jasmine Vido argues in her literature review that the initiative is more about Bell creating his brand than attempting to battle the stigma surrounding mental illness.
“In exchange for the publicity of the campaign, Bell is a service provider receiving a financial award,” the master’s student at the University of Windsor writes in her major research paper.
