Lionel Richie Adopted Daughter: In 1983, Lionel Richie was at a Prince concert in Los Angeles and couldn’t take his attention away from the stage. But it wasn’t the “Purple Rain” singer who had caught his attention; it was the 2-year-old girl who was accompanying him on the tambourine. Lionel was attracted to her right away. He started asking around to ascertain who the child belonged to. Nicole Camille Escovedo was the daughter of musician Peter Escovedo and Karen Moss, a personal assistant to Peter’s sister, singer Sheila Escovedo, best known as Sheila E.
Nicole Camille Escovedo, the two-year-old daughter of one of his band members and niece of drummer Sheila E., was adopted by Lionel and his first wife in 1983. Nicole Richie was raised as their daughter, and she was legally adopted when she was nine years old.
Lionel bumped into Nicole again a few weeks later and heard about her issues. Nicole’s parents’ careers concerned Lionel: “We [were] a little worried that the little kid couldn’t go on tour because a 2-year-old needs to be stationary — they can’t keep going on the road.”
