It was created by Henry Spencer, who died around 1478, in the 15th century and who gave it all its origin. It was said in the 16th century, that the Spencers were a cadet branch of the ancient House Le Despencer, although the idea was subverted since then in his essay The Rise of the Spencers in particular by J. John Spencer, who became a feoffee (trustee) of Wormleighton in Warwickshire in 1469 and a tenant at Althorp in Northamptonshire in 1486, was a near relative of Henry Spencer (died around 1478). First he made a living by dealing in cattle and other products by his nephew, Sir John Spencer (d. 1522) and then saved sufficient money in order to buy both the Wormleighton and Althorp lands. The Manor House was completed in 1512 and Wormleighton was purchased in 1506. Spencer also bought a mooring house and a few hundred acres of land for the estate of Althorp in 1508. From the 1480s he was pasturing sheep here.
